New Delhi, Mar 28: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came down heavily on the Centre for failing to prepare for the contingency caused due to coronavirus lockdown.
Gandhi shared a video of the mass exodus of the migrant workers on Saturday on his Twitter handle. “Out of work & facing an uncertain future, millions of our brothers & sisters across India are struggling to find their way back home. It’s shameful that we’ve allowed any Indian citizen to be treated this way & that the Govt had no contingency plans in place for this exodus,” he said in a tweet accompanying the video.
The video shows massive crowd of migrant workers gathered at Delhi-UP border at a time when there is a need to maintain social distance.
The Delhi and UP governments are trying to bring the situation to control and have announced special buses to reach migrant workers to their destinations. Measures such as providing food through community kitchens, rent free accommodation, night shelters have been taken up to aid migrant labourers.
The mass exodus began after 21-day lockdown was announced. Many migrant workers have started walking towards their homes, which are in others states and districts. With social distancing, safety and hygiene protocols not being followed by the labourers, the purpose for the lockdown is being defeated.
