Beltangady, Dec 12: It has come to light that an areca nut trader from Aladangady near Venoor has fled, leaving a number of areca growers duped to the extent of ten crore rupees. The man who left areca growers in the lurch happens to be Ramla H from Shirlalu village in the taluk. It is said that hundreds of areca growers have been taken for a ride by him, after buying areca stock from them and promising to pay dues to them later.
A number of people like Sanjeeva Poojary and H Dharnappa Poojary from Kodange near Aladangady, Ammaji K Shirlalu, Ramananda Poojary Shirlalu, and Lingappa Bangera have filed complaint in Venoor police station. More complaints are expected to be filed by growers shortly. On the basis of these complaints, the police have registered a case.
Ramla owned a shop, Karnataka Supari Traders, at Aladangady. He wasbrunning this business since many years. As per an estimate, he has unpaid dues of about ten crore rupees.
Ramla's shop and also his bank account have been found closed. The complainants have information that Ramla is trying to move abroad to escape from legal action. The complaints therefore have urged the authorities to move swiftly to stop him from doing so.
