Emraan Hashmi Accuses Housing Society of Religious Bias

Mumbai, July 31 (IANS): Wondering why people talked of secularism in India, actor Emraan Hashmi Friday accused a Mumbai housing society of refusing him permission to buy a flat because he is Muslim - a complaint echoed in the past by others in Bollywood.

Emraan has complained to the Maharashtra Minorities Commission (MMC), which says the management of Nibbana Complex, a posh society in Bandra's elite Pali Hill area, is still considering his "antecedents" before taking a final call.

"This has political connotations, so they don't want to talk about it openly. Yesterday, they told me that I can't get the NoC. I asked them why aren't you giving me the (no objection) certificate -- am I a criminal, or a terrorist or have I done anything illegal?" Emraan told reporters here Friday with his uncle and well-known filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt by his side.

Emraan said: "It is strange that they don't tell you on your face that you can't get a house because you are a Muslim. It would have been easier if they would have told me openly. What they told me is that they can't allow me to live there because I am a serial kisser and my presence will have a bad influence on the children staying there."

The actor, who featured in films like "Murder" and "Gangster - A Love Story", wanted to buy a house in Pali Hill so that he could stay close to his parents.

In his complaint to the MMC, he said he was refused the NoC despite paying the token amount of Rs.100,000 and the society management ignored his parents' requests to meet them over the issue.

MMC vice-chairman Abraham Mathai said: "We have been told that the society is considering the 'antecedents' of the applicant (Hashmi) before it can take a final decision in the matter."

"Accordingly, we have also advised Hashmi to get a Crime Investigation Department (CID) G Branch certificate, which will effectively prove his antecedents and submit it to the housing society," Mathai told IANS today.

Mathai said if the society is found to have practised communal bias its office bearers could face action.

An office bearer of the Nibbana Complex, however, told mediapersons that certain other formalities had to be completed before Emraan could be granted the NoC. He added that a society meeting was scheduled for next Sunday to take a final decision, but the applicant had raised a controversy before that.

In the past, senior actress and former MP Shabana Azmi alleged religious discrimination when she attempted to buy a flat in Mumbai. Actor Arbaaz Khan, brother of Salman Khan, had also experienced similar difficulties when he attempted to buy a flat here.

Emraan said: "Being a celebrity if I'm facing problems in buying a house here, I wonder what kind of problems others would have been facing. All the time we are talking about secularism but with such incidents what secularism are people talking about?"

He said someone suggested to him that he purchase the house in the name of his wife Parveen, who is a Hindu. "I can do that, but why should I do that?" he asked.

Bhatt said such discrimination was a serious problem plaguing the country.

"Even 62 years after independence, the virus of communalism is alive in an area like Pali Hill, which is known as India's Beverly Hills where stars like Sunil Dutt lived and Dilip Kumar is still living there. It's a serious problem and is the country ready to accept that communalism is still surviving?"

"There are also certain societies in the area that do not give NoCs to non-Hindus," he said.

Whether this particular case has merit or not, it is true that as long as different religions and races try to co-exist there will be a degree of communalism and racism in any society. However, I find great offense in Mr. Hashmi questioning India''s secularism. If he got his flat India is secular and if he did not it is not is pure simple minded ranting by a disgruntled man. You see, the very fact he has a recourse via a government body called Maharastra Minorities Commission shows that secularism is alive and well in India. Would he expect an avenue to vent his feelings available in a non-secular country? What rights do our lower earning country men and women have in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other middle eastern countries where they are treated as serfs? Mr. Hashmi, secularism does not guarantee that there will be no incidents like this - it guarantees that you have recourse to a just solution. I wish you had given a statement which went something like this "I think I was unfairly discriminated against by the housing society. But thank Allah that I live in a secular society because I can now bring this to the attention of the Minorities Board and get justice" You see how much of a healing statement this is? In a mixed society, it is not only the majority community that bears the responsibility to be fair to all but it is necessary for the minorities as well to be appreciative of the privileges they enjoy and to act like mature responsible citizens instead of making inflammatory remarks. Would I be right if I questioned India''s secularism knowing that haj pilgrims are given monetary and other assistance, but no such thing is available for pilgrims going to Varanasi or Tirupathi? I am proud that India does this and it took in Tibetan refugees and Bangla Deshis. My hats off to the poor of all religions in in India, for, it is they who joyfully share their meager resources with all and who in their hearts are truly secular. Ms Azmi and Mr Hashmi add no value to to this beautiful mosaic called India which is unlike any other in the world - let us all be proud citizens no matter what our religion, caste or creed.

Mr.Emran, If someone doesnt want to watch your film, it is his wish , you cannot force them to watch. Same way if the seller doesnt want to sell his flat that is his wish. Please dont create unnecessary problems.

Racism is outrages in a democratic society but it is true in India that there is bias between people of different communities. For example in the parsi colony in Mumbai, they do not admit people of another community. So also muslims, they do not admit people of other communities in their society. Go to Argipada, Nagpada, Mohamad Ali Road, Bhendi Bazar and you will know the truth. In Gujurati communities, they will not allow christians and muslims in their society because they eat meat, fish, eggs. Dear Emraan Hashmi, please don''t bother the pali society but find another location or stay in a hotel or rental flat .

The Pali hills association has probably their own reasons to deny Mr. Emraan residency. Yes, stars like Sunil Dutt and Dilip Kumar still live there but they definitely they don''t want accused terrorist Sanjay Dutt living there.

India is one of the biggest democracies and has remained very secular inspite of the divesity of religions and cultures. These accusations are meaningless until proven otherwise.

It may very well be true that Emraan has been denied a house in Pali Hill because of his religion. I am a Hindu and was segregated and denied entry to a Muslim friend''s wedding. I am also proud that I grew up in a Catholic home in Mumbai during my toddler days. Even with all the religious bias, Emraan has become a huge star whose movies are watched and enjoyed by all Indians alike. We should not forget that our differences is our strength. Everyone should strongly condemn this religious bias and punish the offenders strongly.

It is not correct at all. When are we going to overcome these narrow parochial boundaries and walls and make our nation strong? We do see forms of descriminations in various walks of life. In this instance, the culprits are all well educated and well off. We can''t blame it on ignorance or lack of education. It comes down to our social attitude... WAKE UP!

I feel its more to do with his image as "serial Kisser" . All have  rights to buy and sell the property in India...if the seller doesnt want to sell then whats the use of making issue...surely high society people do not want Imran hasmi as there neighbour because of his imaage . It will affect their children...So I dont think there is anything wrong in it.

Of course even after independence virus of "Communalism" is very much alive in most of the parts in India. This virus is also going to spead to other States of our country if we deviate from secularism. As an Indian Citizen we should have the freedom to buy and sell property any where in the part of our country. There should not be any discrimination in property deals.
