Guwahati, Apr 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the opposition party of repeatedly undermining the judiciary whenever verdicts didn’t align with its political interests.

Taking to X, Sarma highlighted the BJP’s consistent stand on respecting judicial independence, especially in light of recent remarks made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey that drew flak. He noted that BJP President J.P. Nadda had clearly distanced the party from Dubey’s comments, stressing that those were his personal views and not representative of the party’s official stance.

“The BJP has always upheld the dignity and independence of the judiciary as the bedrock of our democracy,” Sarma wrote, adding that Nadda’s statement reaffirms the party’s unwavering respect for judicial institutions.

In contrast, Sarma cited multiple incidents where the Congress, according to him, tried to tarnish the image of sitting judges. He pointed to the impeachment motion against Justice Dipak Misra, and Congress’s critical reactions to judgments delivered by Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Arun Mishra, D.Y. Chandrachud, and S Abdul Nazeer.

“This pattern of selective criticism exposes how the Congress questions judicial credibility when rulings don’t match their political narrative,” Sarma said, calling it a dangerous trend that erodes public trust in democratic institutions.

He asserted that respect for the judiciary must be consistent and not influenced by political convenience. “Selective approbation of judgments is damaging to democracy. Criticism must be rooted in principle, not political expediency,” he concluded.
