Puttur, Jul 9: The town received 541.6 mm rain from July 1 to July 7 morning, the highest in the last 20 years. As compared to last year, the town received 1,402.6 m from January 1 to July 7 this year, as compared to 1142 mm of rain recorded during the same period last year.
A huge tree fell across the state highway between Puttur and Mani on the evening of Wednesday July 8. No damage was done, but traffic remained hampered for over three hours. Puttur town police inspector K Srikant along with other personnel, with the help of Puttur range forest officer Sundar Shetty and the local forest employees, took up the task of removing the tree with the help of saws and backhoe. During this period, buses took a deviation to Mangalore vita Vittal and Kalladka.
Mescom has reported a loss about Rs 1.5 crore due to rain this year in the district, as 118 transformers and 673 electric poles suffered damages due to rain. The compound wall and pandal of Punaroor Lord Vishwanath temple collapsed due to heavy rain. Three huge pillars, 30-feet high black stone wall and the pandal of cement sheets collapsed to the ground.
