Mangalore, Jul 8: ‘Mandd Sobhann’ staged its 91st monthly theater performance with ‘Ajaal’ which portrayed glimpses of the life of traditional Konkani families in the rural area across undivided Dakshina Kannada (DK) at the Francis and Louisa Fernades, Cascia Vedi, Kalaangan, Shaktinagar, on Sunday July 5.
Although it has been raining consistently over the past few days across the city and the suburbs, a significant number of theater enthusiasts turned up to witness the performance.
The Konkani traditions and customs that are followed during a baby’s cradling ceremony, ‘Gumta music’, traditional delicacies made out of jackfruit, Konkani proverbs and old adages, and cultural traditions, were all showcased.
Savoury ‘happalas’ made of jackfruit were also distributed to viewers on the occasion.
Kulshekar Holy Cross parishioner and Gumta musician Valerian entertained the audience with traditional Gumta music. It was indeed a rare event as very few Gumta musicians still pursue the family tradition.
Dennis Monteiro directed the stage programme while Sangeet Guru Joel Pereira, Victor Lobo Bajal, Rony Crasta Kelarai, Mandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario, president Luvi Pinto, Celine D’Souza Kulshekar, Amora Monteiro, Naveen Lobo, and Blasius Monteiro, assisted with their music.
