Bhatkal, Jul 4: In a gory incident reported from Jadiyana House in Kaykini Matadahithlu near Bhatkal, a father and his three daughters committed mass suicide at their home on the night of Thursday July 2. The family was said to have been frustrated over the fact that none of the girls had been able to get married till now.
Eraiah Nagappa Mogera (55) and his daughters Lakshmi (25), Jaya (24) and Jyoti (19), sought to end their lives by hanging themselves from the roof of their house, presumably because marriages of none of the three girls had materialized so far, in spite of best efforts.
Eraiah's wife had died about 15 years ago. Father and two of his daughters lived here while the youngest daughter worked as a housemaid in Bangalore. Eraiah eked out a living through fishing activity conducted through a boat bought on partnership. The family did not have any serious financial worries and the villagers perceive that the failure of the family to arrange the marriages of the girls could be the only predominant reason for the mass suicide.
It is said, that Jyoti, who worked at Bangalore, had been asked to come home a couple of days ago by the family, on the pretext of attending the marriage of a relative.
