Tehran, Apr 25: In the wake of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 innocent tourists earlier this week, Iran has expressed its readiness to facilitate greater understanding between India and Pakistan. Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing Tehran's strong ties with both neighboring countries, offered to use Iran’s good offices to mediate between New Delhi and Islamabad at this difficult juncture.
“India and Pakistan are brotherly neighbours of Iran, enjoying relations rooted in centuries-old cultural and civilizational ties. Like other neighbours, we consider them our foremost priority,” Araghchi posted on X. “Tehran stands ready to use its good offices in Islamabad and New Delhi to forge greater understanding at this difficult time.”
Araghchi also invoked the wisdom of 13th-century Persian poet Saadi Shirazi, quoting lines that call for unity and compassion among all human beings. The lines read: "Human beings are members of a whole; In creation of one essence and soul; If one member is inflicted with pain; Other members uneasy will remain." This message underscored Iran's commitment to fostering peace and dialogue during times of heightened tensions.
The attack, which unfolded on Tuesday in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, involved four heavily armed terrorists, including two from Pakistan. They opened fire on a group of tourists, leading to the deaths of 26 individuals and leaving many others critically injured. The brutal assault has been condemned globally and has further strained relations between India and Pakistan, with India taking significant diplomatic actions in response, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, expelling Pakistani military attaches, and shutting down the Attari-Wagah border.
The terror group responsible for the attack, The Resistance Front (TRF), is believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. The attack has sparked worldwide outrage, with leaders from various countries offering condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India.
Earlier, the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi had also condemned the attack and expressed deep sympathy to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
Iran's offer of mediation reflects its long-standing diplomatic engagement with both India and Pakistan, positioning Tehran as a potential player in de-escalating tensions in the region.
