Mangaluru, April 25: “Mandd Sobhann has been consistently striving to bring out the talents of children. As a result of their dedicated efforts, many young artistes have emerged in the field of Konkani culture. If you too put in sincere effort, success is possible,” said Silvia Ruth Castelino, vice president of Kulshekar Church and a physical education teacher.
She was speaking at the inauguration of the ten-day children’s summer camp, ‘Kaajal’ (meaning ‘Kohl for the Eye’), held at Kalangann, Shaktinagar, on Friday, April 25. In a symbolic gesture, the camp was inaugurated by applying 'kaajal' to a child participant’s eye.
Following the inauguration, a specially designed beginner-level textbook titled “Ami Konkani Shikun Ya” (Let Us Learn Konkani) was released. Guest of honour Eric D’Souza presented a copy of the textbook to the members of the textbook committee.
A total of 61 children from Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Bengaluru are participating in the camp. They will receive specialised training in their chosen streams of singing, dancing, or drama. Additionally, all campers will undergo training in Konkani language, public speaking, and programme anchoring.
The camp will conclude with a grand showcase of the children’s talents during the 281st monthly theatre (Monthi Vedik) on May 4.
Present on the occasion were Mandd Sobhann office-bearers Eric Ozario, Luvie Pinto, and Karen Mardtha. The camp’s resource persons were also introduced to the audience.
