Mangaluru: International Yoga Day celebrated at St Aloysius College

Mangaluru, Jun 22: The NCC Units (Army, Navy and Air Wing of 18 KAR Battalion NCC and 5 (Kar) NCC Naval Unit), National Service Scheme (NSS) and Student Activity Cell of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru celebrated International Yoga Day on Friday, June 21 in Arrupe block of the College.

Lt Col Gracian Sequeira, admn officer, 18 Karn Bn; Dr Ishwar Bhat, coordinator of the event, and professor in Physics; Lt Shakin Raj, ANO, Army Wing of college, Sub Lt Hariprasad Shetty, ANO Navy Wing of college; Subedar Shivanand and all staff of 18 Kar Battalion NCC Army Wing; com officer Manoj of 18 Kar BN, Alwin D’souza, college NSS programme officer; Sushila Mumari V, yoga instructor; PI staff and cadets took part in the International Yoga Day. Dr Ishwar Bhat delivered the welcome address. He stressed on the importance of yoga for a better health and new life, and advised the students to start practicing yoga for a healthy life.



Yoga instructor Sushila Kumari V briefed about yoga which benefits one’s health and long life. She taught Tadasana, Vrikshasana, Trikonasana, Pranayama and meditation.

“Although yoga has its origins in ancient India, its methods and purposes are universal. Yoga is a way of improving health and fitness of the body, but also as a means of personal and spiritual development.”

International Day for Yoga was declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly on June 21, 2015. Since its inception, International Day of Yoga is celebrated annually all over the world.

    Pilates is an alternative to Yoga, which provides similar benefits, and doesn't have any religious or spiritual overtones. Non-Hindu institutes can explore Pilates as a way for their students to lead healthy life.
