Mangaluru: Lack of availability - City administrations to restrict water supply

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 20: The city administration has begun rationing system for supply of drinking water within the limits of the city corporation here beginning at 6 pm on April 18. Drinking water supply by taps would be suspended till 6 am on April 20. Water supply would be resumed for four days after which a two-day gap would be maintained before starting to supply water to city residents.

The city corporation is compelled to take this step as level of water at Thumbe vented dam is diminishing on account of the fact that inflow at the dam has stopped. Because of hot weather, water gets evaporated too. As at Friday, the water level at the dam stood at 5.37 metres. If water is supplied every day, water shortage would hit the city by second half of May. Although initially the city corporation had decided to restrict water supply from April 11, it changed its decision and postponed it to 6 pm on April 18.

Engineer of the city corporation, Linge Gowda, said that water supply would be stopped for 48 hours after every four days, although the initial rationing period was only for 36 hours. This system will be continued till May 14. If the level of water is augmented by then on account of rains if any, water supply would be resumed for full time otherwise the rationing system may be continued, sources said.

The city municipality here has said that water supply in the city will be maintained at the current level of once in three days. The level of water in Baje dam has been dwindling, and the level of water on Friday stood at 2.74 metres. For some areas, water is being released at night, said engineer of the municipality, Ganesh.

The administrations have requested the people to save water, not to waste it, restrict use for washing of vehicles etc, use less water for washing of clothes, use washed water to feed the plants and trees etc and to stop tap leakage.

Rehna, Mangalore is absolutely correct. We, the people of Mangalore are to be blamed for the scarcity of water. Time and again I had cautioned the readers through these columns that if we did not stop cutting the trees, we would have to bear the consequences of that. Indiscriminate cutting down of trees has played a big role in the reduction of rainfall. When we were children, it used to rain cat and dogs in our area but now the rains come and shake hands with us and go away. Our avarice is at the root of the problem. Some good hearted people started the agitation against Yettinahole but where was the support from the people? We acted as though it does not concern us. When people were doing their best to get this project scrapped, there were people among us who were criticising them saying "Aklek marl or aklek bethe daala bele ijji." There is no use blaming the government or the politicians. They are not bothered about the people. We have to paddle our own canoe. There is no other way out. The so called intelligent people of Mangalore should wake up to this reality and start planting trees on a war footing. Huge destruction to our nature has taken place and if we fail to see the writing on the wall and continue with our lethargic habits, the future generation would have to pay and suffer for our greed. The rainy season is approaching, let us take an oath to plant as many saplings as possible. The elders should educate the children and encourage them to grow trees. Churches, mosques and temples should make it a point to spread greenery all around them. Every house should have trees around them. At least now let us shed our selfish attitude and think about the others. We will also benefit from that.

Regarding this let me put up one point in this forum. Our new bishop Dr. Peter Paul has taken a strong step regarding growing up the trees. He sent a circular to every house, few months back, and requested every house to plant trees as many as possible in their compound. His step towards this is much appreciable. . God bless him always and for his work.

The valve man equally plays important role in creating artificial shortage of water to get undue benefits from tanker lobby. During Janaury when there is full water in Thumbe we we're denied a single drop of water through tap at Dambel which is hardly 3kms away from MCC building. To tackle such problem there should be a transfer policy for staff of MCC including valve man.

time for mangaloreans to become old generation. Go to fields and take tissue paper for the nature's call.
In another five years, if no proper action is taken, this city will face severe water scarcity.
most of the people working in MCC regardless of political party affiliations are corrupt

Congress you are ruling City Corporation. Now go to Moily and ask him for water. When yettinahole project was implemented no congress guys had the guts to oppose the project.
Trees were cut and so much disaster has been made because of the project, how can you expect rains in that area. Secondly we the people of Mangalore are to be blamed as no one came out to support against the project. Only a handful were there in the protest.
Any way now dont blame any one , but be prepared ti face the worst.

Very well said by you Rehna... Nobody from congress objected this project... As a result everywhere floods we experienced. This is the curse from our mother nature and the tears of the cut trees. Very sad For moily no loss... Loss for our nature... Is money gathered by him and other leaders quenching the thirst ?

If the rulers don't have long lasting vision except looting, this is bound to happen. What did the rulers did after 1947? Basic necessity of water not been fulfilled, forget about other things.

the whole country has become corrupt after 2014. MCC had many options to preserve water but they do not do it as the tanker water suppliers bribe them to create artificial water scarcity so that these tanker fellows can make money.

Time to boot out the demo crazy system in the country

In middle eastern countries petrol is cheaper than water. They have money...do not have mud..to produce food grains. From india soil is imported in container for there requirement. For each and everything wants to depend upon other countries. Dont turn our country same. Preserve water. Use as much as you need.
