Mangaluru, Feb 18: Annual sports meet of St Aloysius ITI was held on February 16 at Gonzaga grounds.
The sports meet was inaugurated by releasing balloons in air. Chief guest of the inaugural programme was GiridharSalian, principal, government ITI, Mangaluru. The programme was presided over by Fr Dionysius Vaz, rector, St Aloysius Institutions. Israr Pasha, an international power lifting champion was felicitated during the
programme.
The event commenced by escorting the dignitaries to the grounds with a school band. Students displayed a splendid march past and gave guard of honour to the dignitaries. Vincent Mendonsa, principal delivered the welcome address. Inaugurating the sports meet, the chief guest said, “I congratulate the management for organising this event every year. It is an opportunity to exhibit inherent talents and nurture them subsequently. Sport inculcates discipline and boosts confidence. Be sportive and take active participation in the event. Make it a habit to exercise daily and keep yourself physically and mentally fit. I wish all the best to every student.”
Addressing the students Fr Melwyn Lobo, director of the institution said, “Sports is natural to every person. We have given this platform to you to discover and exhibit your sports skills. Extra-curricular activities are like side dishes for a lunch. They add taste to our life. Sport teaches character, it teaches how to play adhering to the rules, and it teaches how to accept victory and defeat. Let us celebrate life. I wish you all the best.”
Students took oath to partake in the event adhering to the rules and regulations exhibiting exemplary sportsmanship.
In his presidential address Fr Dionysius Vaz said, “I congratulate the chief guest Giridhar Salian and honorable guest Israr Pasha for the achievements and accolades won in their respective fields. Sports are necessary for life. Combined strengths of mind, body and emotions will give success in life. Sports teach focus and discipline. I wish every student the very best. May you learn values necessary for life.” Other dignitaries on the dais were Silvana Rizzi, an Italian benefactor of the institution and Alwyn Lobo, convener of the event.
Students participated in the sports events cheerfully. The 4X100 mtr relay was a show stealer. MRAC senior students and MRAC junior students won the first and second places respectively. Students of Electronic Mechanic trade won the third place. Individual championship for boys was jointly won by Mohammed Zunaid of MMV trade and Karan of Electrician trade. Individual Championship for girls was won by Theeksha of Sewing Technology. Winners of all the events were honoured by medals and certificates during the concluding programme. Robin Vas, junior training officer was the compere for the event.
