Mangaluru, Feb 12: Srinivas University and Institutions sponsored by A Shama Rao Foundation will observe Founder's Day and Annual Day on February 14 to commemorate the birth anniversary of late A Shama Rao. They will also celebrate the completion of 30 years by Srinivas Group.
The formal function will take place at 9.30 am. at Srinivas Private University Campus, Mukka, here. Dr P G Girish, director of Medical Education, Karnataka and Prof Karnam Uma Maheshwara Rao, director, NITK will be the chief guests.
CA A Raghavendra Rao, chancellor, Srinivas University and president of A Shama Rao Foundation will preside over the function. Dr A Srinivas Rao, pro chancellor, Srinivas University and vice president, A Shama Rao Foundation will be present on the occasion.
The formal function will include an awards ceremony, annual report and felicitation of PhD recipients. It will be followed by a cultural programnme. This is the first time that all 13 institutions of the group are celebrating Founder's Day together, thereby projecting a unified institutional identity.
Awards - 2019
• His Holiness Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji, pontiff of Sri Pejavar Math will be conferred with honorary doctorate in recognition of his lifetime contribution to education, spirituality and social reform
• Dr M Siddaraju, Selection Grade Lecturer in Biology, Sri Satya Sai Loka Seva PU College, Alike, Bantwal taluk, Dakshina Kannada district will be conferred with A Shama Rao Memorial Outstanding Teacher Award-2019 for his contribution in the field of education in undivided DK district
• Prof M Lakshminarayana Samaga will be conferred with A Shama Rao Memorial Award 2019 for his contribution in the field of education, culture and social service.
Graduation Day / Convocation Day
The first Graduation Day / Convocation Day of Srinivas University will be held on February 15. Dr S Sachidananda, vice chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences graciously consented to be chief guest on the occasion. He will hand over the convocation certificates to the rank holders and graduates. The formal function will commence with a ceremonial grand procession from the dental college to the main stage.
About the founder
A Shama Rao was born in 1909 at Aroor, a village in Udupi taluk. He received his early education at Katapady, Udupi and Mangaluru and later obtained BA and LT Degrees from Madras University. His interest in different walks of life led him to take up varied courses such as Secretarial Practice, Scouts training and First Aid. His wife Indiramma Shama Rao supported the founder by acting as his friend, philosopher and guide.
Late A Shama Rao began his illustrious teaching career in Mangaluru in 1939. He was the founder headmaster of the well known SVH Higher Secondary Residential School from 1943 to 1956. He retired as headmaster of BEM High School, Mangaluru in 1969.
Even after retirement, he continued to be active in the field of education and social service. He passed away at the age of 83, on December 28, 1992. Indiramma Shama Rao passed away on December 5, 2009 at the ripe age of 92.
