Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 27: In a bizarre incident that occurred at the Mangaluru International Airport on the outskirts of the city, an Air Ambulance that arrived from overseas to take a lady UK citizen back to the country for further treatment broke down and the patient, who was boarded on the ambulance had to get admitted to the hospital in the city again.

Anne Levish Smith, a British, who had arrived to the city on the cruise ship that docked at the New Mangalore Port Trust, ten days ago, developed severe breathing problems and was admitted to a private hospital in the city. Anne was accompanied by her husband Levish Smith and he intended to take her back to Britain for further treatment. Accordingly, an air ambulance arrived from Britain on the afternoon of Saturday, January 26 to the Mangaluru International Airport.

Both the husband and wife boarded the air ambulance at around 5 pm in order to go to Britain. However, when the air ambulance was about to take off, it developed some technical snag and Anne and her husband had to be disembarked from the air ambulance and Anne was once again shifted to the private hospital in the city.

It is learnt that a relief flight accompanied by technical personnel to repair the broken down air ambulance will arrive and Anne will be lifted to Britain in that flight. It is said that this is the first instance of an overseas air ambulance breaking down in the Mangaluru International Airport.

NN,NN,for your kind information, the sick insurance here is quite different than as you think.Everyone must have a sick insurance.A worker s insurance will be automatically cut from his pay sheet ,sick ,and church ,or tax on pay.Sick insurance will be paid half from employer,.when your pay is above a certain level ,automatically a private patient. You have to pay bill and get back from insurance. Will be handled from private room and chief.Even when you go to practice doctor you need not wait will get first preference.problem arises when you go in pension, you have to pay your sick insurance ,part of employers ,too you have to pay.(Normal )pension and your oldage percent too will be cut from pay automatically. In england must be different.

Looks like you are working for insurance firm...
whatever it may be, insurance works as long as company honours claims in the timely manner... If they do not honour the claim then dispute starts!

Many doctors in UK are from Mangaluru. It would have been cheaper for her to finish her treatment here.

@Ruben Pinto Mangalore,it is not a matter of cost ,cheaper or costly.Mostly Europeans when they travel out of Europe ,have to or do mostly a International sick insurance which includes such facilities of travelling back in emergency with medical asst. Thats paid by insurance.Might have to pay a smal amount of money or depends on what type. She had bad luck.Good luck it happened in mangalore where we have good doctors and hospitals. In middle of sea ,would be a disaster.

sri-elder,karkala ,dont worry ,you need not pay their bill, they wont send it to you. This functions so.First when you are dischrged ,before you go back, you have to pay the bill self from your pocket.and the bill will be later surrendered to the sick insurance..They will pay you back ,in your countrys currency .As I delivered in India (in 79)my bill was accepted without extra insurance. But later they changed the law.Now you can but not must ,should have a extra insurance out of EU land.In case of emergency ,it comes to help wherever it is.Because some people ,were going on holidays decieved the sick insurance with fake bills. It was a huge loss to them.

    Sri,

In UK all citizens have Government Health Insurance, which pays everything including Air-Ambulance....no need for patient to pay from their pocket...

In western countries there in no political corruption...so they can afford it...

Helicopter maximum speed could be 200 KMPH...I think air-ambulance here should be a small jet plane with a speed of say 600-800 KMPH...possibly daiji put helicopter picture as representation picture only...

    Tak...Takk...

Flavian, Mangaluru/Kuwait — It is quite common. Most insurance companies offer SOS services that includes airlifting using air ambulances! Most of them are covered by companies such as International SOS https://www.internationalsos.com/

The chopper arrived from UK. So when they came all the way from Britain they know how go back. They may use nearest country from here to EU or middle East to refuel. But as Mr. Roshan has pointed out it's a representation image means that actual air ambulance may differ.
