Mangaluru, Nov 29: Though the gang rape case that occurred at Thota Bengre has come to light trifle late, this issue of harassment to tourists and locals who visit Thannirbavi and Bengre areas for leisure is not new. Even a gang of miscreants had tried to loot a former deputy commissioner (DC) of the district!
During the period of 2003-05, the then DC who was newly married had been to Thannirbavi for sightseeing. The miscreants tried to loot the DC. Due to the incident, the DC had taken strict action and many culprits were arrested.
If the same measures that were implemented during that period continued, the illegal activities and acts of murder that take place today in these areas would not have happened. But the lax of control by the administration is evident by the fact that heinous crime like gang rape is still happening in Bengre area.
The easy availability of drugs in this part of the city is also a reason for increase in crimes. Moreover, Thannirbavi and Bengre are tourist spots which become easier for the anti-social elements to extract money and harass them.
Minister U T Khader has appreciated the quick action of the police in arresting the culprits and has announced a cash prize of Rs one lac for the team. In addition, Khader also promised that he will try to get compensation from the government for the victim girl of this incident. Quick action will also be taken to open an outpost in Bengre, informed Khader. The minister also requested the lawyers not to argue in favour of the alleged rapists.
