Udupi, Nov 16: Further to the meeting held on June 20 regarding traffic problems in Udupi, a meeting was held by district administration on November 15 to discuss banning protests, meetings and celebrations at Chittaranjan Circle. It was decided there to ban meetings, protests, celebrations at Chittaranjan Circle henceforth.
Chittaranjan Circle is in the heart of Udupi. Mescom office, Udupi head post office, government women’s hospital, Gandhi hospital and Krishna Math are in the vicinity. Vehicles heading to Manipal have to pass through this road. There are several commercial complexes here. The place is always crowded due to customers and vehicles.
Several political parties and organisations are holding protests and other programmes after obtaining permission here, obstructing traffic flow and it has become a hurdle to pedestrians. It causes traffic problems on the roads nearby and becomes an impediment for emergency services. It is also difficult to maintain law and order when untoward incidents happen due to crowded streets.
There is provision to use Satyagraha Katte for people and organisations outside the district office building. Therefore, deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis permanently banned holding protests, meetings and celebrations at Chittaranjan Circle, in view of people’s well being and for smooth traffic flow.
