Mangaluru, Sep 26: A special lecture on the topic 'Contribution of Christian Missionaries to Kannada Literature' was held in the auditorium of St Agnes College (autonomous) on September 26 under the aegis of Kannada department and Kannada Sangha of the institution.
Bennet J Ammanna, writer and member of Tulu Academy was the resource person.
In his lecture, Ammanna said, "The contribution of Christian missionaries to modern Kannada literature is immense. Their contribution can be noticed right from the time of establishing Kannada schools after the arrival of Basel Mission Institute to the city of Mangaluru. Scholars like Kittel and Mogling, who almost forgot the purpose of their visit to India like propagation of Christian faith and spreading the good news, engrossed themselves in developing Kannada literature.
"The founding of printing machine in Mangaluru became the pillar for the growth of Kannada language and literature. The first Kannada newspaper 'Mangalore Samachara' paved the way for Kannada literature. Their work became the main inspiration for the dawn of modern Kannada literature."
Dr C M Jeswina, principal of the college, who presided over the function appreciated the quest for knowledge of the scholars of yesteryears and their dedication in learning and said that their efforts should become the ideals for today's young generation.
Dr Shailaja K, HOD of the Kannada department welcomed the gathering. Dr Sampoornananda Balkur, convener of Kannada Sangha rendered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Likita, secretary of Kannada Bitti Patike.
