Mangaluru, Sep 7: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district Muslim League has urged Congress party to field a candidate from the Muslim community from Dakshina Kannada constituency in the coming Lok Sabha elections. A decision to this effect was taken at the executive committee meeting held at the office of the organization at Bunder here on Tuesday, September 4.

A release stated that it was decided to submit memorandums to All Indian Congress Committee president, Rahul Gandhi, state Congress affairs in-charge, Venugopal, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, Dinesh Gundu Rao, and Dakshina Kannada district Congress Committee president, Harish Kumar with regards to this request. It was also decided to urge the party to give opportunity to Muslim candidates in the coming legislative council and Rajya Sabha elections.

Noting that Dakshina Kannada district has the highest number of Muslim voters in the entire state, and that over 90 percent of Muslims here had supported Congress in the last assembly election, the committee felt that giving opportunity to Muslim community is just and proper.
