Udupi: India Post Payments Bank becomes functional in district

Udupi, Aug 31: Udupi postal division's postal superintendent, Rajashekhar Bhat, said that India Post Payments Bank (KPPB) will become functional from September 1 onward in five centres in the district. He said that after December, this system will be extended to all over the district.

Giving details at a press conference held here on Wednesday August 29, IPPB will be started in the main post office here for the first time in the district. Along with this, IPPB will be made available in Bannanje, Uchila, Belapu and Paniyoor post offices, he explained.

"This is a paperless accounts system. People can open accounts on the basis of Adhar cards of cellphone numbers. The customers get all information about funds transfer, credit to account etc through cellphones. Instead of account numbers, the customers will be issued QR cards, which can be used to make transactions in the accounts. Accounts can be opened without any fee and maximum amount of five lac rupees an be deposited by customers," he explained.

Bhat stated that account opening and handling can be done from the comforts of one's home through the postman, and the main purpose of this scheme is to increase knowledge about digital banking in rural areas. He said that these accounts can be used for payment of bills college fee, electricity bills etc.

IPPB banking service in the district will be inaugurated by deputy commissioner of the district Priyanka Mary Francis, at a function being held at Bannanje Narayana Guru Hall at 2.15 pm on September 1. District superintendent of police, Laxman Nimbargi, will take part in the function, he said.
