Bengaluru, Aug 25: An auto rickshaw driver, who allegedly murdered a home alone woman named Gowramma (63) on August 10 in a farm house near Mailasandra bus stand on Mysuru Road, stands arrested. The arrested man has been identified as Venkataramu (52), residing at Hegganahalli Cross here.
Gowramma from Harohalli had been staying in a farm house on Mysuru Road after the demise of her husband alone. Venkataramu came into contact with her, and he often took her to Harohalli in his auto rickshaw. He frequently visited Gowramma and had food there, although he is married and has children.
It is said that Venkataramu often borrowed money from Gowramma. He had noticed that the woman had a sum of Rs 3.48 lac in her account with Canara Bank's Harohalli branch, and he used to pester Gowramma for money. Frustrated by his demands, Gowramma had told him that she would go to a village near Kanakapura and settle there. Angered by the thought that Gowramma's return to village would deprive him of money, Venkataramu sliced the woman's throat with a sickle and took away Rs 29,000 in cash kept in the house. He also told her relatives that Gowramma had been murdered. He wailed for her death and took part in the funeral.
Gowramma had told her relatives about the harassment from Venkataramu and as such they expressed suspicion about his involvement with the murder. Although Venkataramu tried to escape, sustained questioning by the police did him in, and he confessed to his crime, the police stated.
