Udupi: Row Over Beating Up Bus Staff : Private Buses Suspend Services

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Aug 14: Taking the commuters by surprise, the Bus Employees Association has decided to go ahead with its move to stay off the roads today,  on the night of Wednesday, August 13. They had earlier warned of such a move, in case the policemen failed to arrest all the accused who beat up a driver and conductor of a bus at Ucchil, by Wednesday afternoon.

Although the people had a clue that such a thing could happen, they were caught unawares. The deadline given to the policemen for nabbing the culprits expired at 3.00 pm on Wednesday, but neither the Bus Owners Association nor the Bus Employees Association had declared their intention to go ahead with the strike till late evening.

The decision to go ahead with the strike was announced later, by Coastal Bus Employees Association president Vijay Kumar and secretary Ramesh Shetty. They said, that they have decided to observe bu strike today, in protest against the failure of the policemen to arrest six more culprits whose names and addresses were furnished to the police. Out of 20 assaulters, they know the identities of these eleven but the policemen have arrested only five persons so far, they said. The bus employees are also resenting a threat posed to the victim Shambhu Hejmady's family by the culrpits. Another demand of the striking employees to book the assailants under section 307 which relates to attempt to murder, has not been acceded to.

Some sources say, that the miscreants have gone underground and hiding at various places. The policemen are not leaving any stones unturned in finding them out but they have not been successful. District deputy commissioner Hemalata said that the policemen have been trying hard to fish out the hiding criminals. The students, employees, fisherwomen and regular commuters who entirely depend on buses, were in for a rude shock today morning, to find to their dismay, that buses were not moving. All buses moving in and around Udupi, including city buses, have stayed off the road today.

In Mangalore however, city buses are functioning but service buses are not moving. The KSRTC has pressed into service several buses to provide some relief to the stranded passengers.

It is time for all the public to wake up and form a movement to take into task both these reckless and proudy bus drivers & staff as well as greedy bus owners. If the bus staff wants public to be punished then in turn they need to be ready to take punishment for every accident, most of them fatal of innocent people on road. It is time our law enforcing agents get out of their somber sleep and do something good for the public and book those insane drivers who cause accidents and kill the innocents. The district authorities should act to cancell the private bus permits and get the routes to state transport agency.

This is the ridicules move from the bus owners association by going again on strike although police has arrested few peoples in concerning the issue. If the culprits hided what the normal public has to do? General public simply tortured due to this panic strikes every alternative day. Police is doing its best job to identify the culprits and put behind the bars.

I would like to ask bus owners association that, day by day every where when your bus drivers carelessly and ruthlessly drive on the road making accident and killing several innocents on the spot, why you people do not take action against them? Now when your person has been beaten from the general public you got panic? How hypocritical is this? Do not think that the general public who supports you always by climbing your buses to travel will support always you for such strikes. Every passenger traveling is scared due to the careless driving from the drivers and every one praying God to have safe journey. Better you people cancel the strike and do the business other wise now general public will protest against your decision and demand to nationalize the route in these undivided districts.

Either trust on the police or urge the government to Nationalize the route. Now general public should raise the demand that, if any where any bus driver makes accident by his unprofessional & careless driving, then these drivers also should be charged with the article 307 attempt of murder as now bus owner's demands. We all general public scared very much to move on the road specially now at NH 17 within Mangalore to Kundapur due to these express buses. In fact as much buses goes on strike and disturbs normal routine of general public then you will also loose the sympathy relatively from them and they will not support you more for these things again.

Private bus owners/employees can not have monopoly on Mangalore-Udupi Roads. Public paying tax to the govt. to get better facility in public transport. Not to disturb the public. Both district administrations have to immediately recomend to run the KSRTC buses on these roads.
