Mumbai, Jan 10: Legendary Mumbai cricketers and former captains of the Indian team will come together with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Wankhede Stadium on January 19.
The celebrations will kick off on January 12, culminating in a grand main event on January 19. Fans can look forward to a memorable evening filled with tributes and performances, according to a press release from MCA.
Prominent Mumbai legends and former and current Indian cricket captains, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Diana Edulji, will unite to honor the historical significance of Wankhede Stadium. The event aims to celebrate the stadium’s pivotal role in cricketing history.
The main event will showcase performances by renowned artists Avadhoot Gupte and Ajay-Atul, along with a mesmerizing laser show. The evening will be hosted by Mandira Bedi and Prasanna Sant, guiding the audience through an engaging experience filled with performances and tributes.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik expressed his excitement, stating: "As we mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic Wankhede Stadium, I warmly invite all cricket fans to be part of this momentous occasion. Our legendary heroes will join us in the celebrations, and together, we will pay tribute to the rich legacy of the Wankhede Stadium, which is a pride of Mumbai. Let’s make this celebration truly unforgettable."
In addition to the grand event, a coffee table book will be released on January 19, and a commemorative postal stamp will be issued to honor the esteemed legacy of Wankhede Stadium. Throughout the celebration week, MCA will conduct various events, including a cricket match between MCA officials and Consul Generals, and bureaucrats on January 12.
The MCA will also recognize the contributions of Mumbai cricket’s unsung heroes by felicitating the groundsmen of MCA’s clubs and grounds, organizing a Polly Umrigar Health Camp, and hosting a special lunch for them on January 15. Furthermore, the members of the Mumbai team that played the first first-class match at the Wankhede Stadium in 1974 will be honored.
