Bengaluru, Jan 2: A man said that his wife, who is 23, was among several women who were groped and molested by a crowd of men at the stroke of 12 am on January 1 at Brigade Road in the city. The 25-year-old said that for himself and his wife, who got married a few months back and set up home at Indiranagar here, this, was their first ever visit to Brigade Road, which forms part of posh M G Road locality.
The man said that he and his wife reached Brigade Road seconds away from the dawn of the New Year. "There were a number of couples in the area around us. Unexpectedly, a group of men suddenly jumped on women and began to grope them. Many were also seen trying to pull down the clothes worn in the lower parts of their bodies including trousers. One could see these men moving their hands all over the bodies of the women," he explained.
The man said that there was lack of female security staff there to handle this situation. He said that the men repeated their ugly act again when the couples reached M G Road. He complained that the policemen on duty did nothing but becoming silent spectators to what was happening in front of their eyes, and in fact, they tried to push him aside as he fought the aggressors. He claimed that he appeared to be the only one who fought off the offenders and that the police did not pay heed to his explanations as they kept pushing him away.
"My wife is still in shock. I am prepared to file a police complaint but my parents do not want me to do so. We belong to middle class family and we want to lead a normal life," he said.
But state home minister, Ramalinga Reddy, when contacted by media persons, maintained that nothing of the sort had happened and that he has not received any such reports.
The man who narrated this ordeal is working as project manager for a firm here. He says that the nightmare was so bad that he has now decided to make it a point to advise each one of his friends and close ones never to go to M G Road area for New Year celebrations.
