Mangaluru, Oct 6: Working towards the words of Gandhiji - ‘Be the change', ELC Kindergarten, and the Centre for Advanced Learning, a small community at Early Learning Centre, on Sunday, October 8, from 10 am to 12.30 pm, will organise a collection drive at their campus at Bejai-Kapikad.
The collection drive is organized towards the mission of renovating the Anganawadi at a government school, to mark Gandhi Jayanthi. Any learning material, toys, books, clothing that children can use - can be dropped off at the location.
On the day, they have also organised a talk by Geetha Nityanand, director, board of studies, Indian Montessori Centre, Bengaluru. She is a highly experienced teacher, counsellor and special educator and will answer all questions pertaining to raising children. The talk is open to public. Entry fee is Rs 150. All proceeds will go towards the Anganawadi renovation project. Interested parents, teachers and people are invited to attend the talk.
The CFAL community is comprised of educators, innovators, social activists, parents, students, concerned citizens and people who are looking to be thoughtful, aware and active citizens. Instead of complaining, blaming others or receding into the comfort of apathy and indifference, they are trying to harness the collective potential of the local community. Their motto is to walk the talk.
This year, 11 students from government colleges will get free JEE, CET training at their centers.
A science/AV room is also provided at the ZP government school at Kottara. Computers, printer, projector and high-speed internet has been provided. To foster the spirit of reading and inquiry, a reading corner with over hundred books has been set up. A computer corner has also been set up with the concept of Self Organized Learning Environment. Both the reading corner and the computer corner are based on the ‘self-learning’ philosophy wherein children can take up projects or activities that interests them and self-direct their learning.
ELC and CFAL also coordinate volunteers and teachers to teach at the school as part of the governments ‘Banni Shanivara’ programme.
Volunteers are invited to sign up to teach for an hour a week. A small amount and gesture goes a long way.
The power of the local community in steering positive change can never be undermined. There is great potential for change if committed persons get together to help others and ourselves by contributing and volunteering a small fraction of our time.
