Karkala, Oct 1: A woman from Belanje Goyikodlu within the limits of Hebri police station, who had recently married, hanged herself in the bathroom of her husband's home on Friday September 29. She has been identified as Sumalata (23), wife of Dinesh from Goyikodlu, Belanje.

Sumalata, native of Nandlu in Nadpal village, had married Dinesh from Belanje five months back. Her husband, Dinesh, operates a canteen at Bengaluru. After marriage, Sumalata used to stay with her husband at Bengaluru. A few days back, she had come back after which she stayed with in-laws. Her parents are suspicious about this death as they cannot think of any reason which could have driven their daughter to commit suicide.

On Friday, brother of Sumalata, Manjunath Kulal, filed complaint in Hebri police station. He has suspected dowry harassment to be the reason for his sister's death. "Dinesh, with the connivance of his brother, Sudhakar and his wife, Jyothi, had mentally tortured my sister on the issue of bringing gold ornaments by way of balance amount of dowry. During the marriage, we had agreed to give 20 sovereigns of gold and could give only 12 sovereigns. We had agreed to give the remaining eight sovereigns of gold later," he explained.

In his complaint, Kulal has guessed that Sumalata would have become mentally depressed on account of incessant dowry harassment, and resorted to this extreme step. Hebri police, who have registered a case, are investigating.
