Mangaluru, Sep 29: A separate section meant exclusively for the use of international passengers is being added to the airport here at a cost of Rs 100 crore. This was stated by director of the airport, V V Rao.
Rao spoke to media persons during the Dasara festivities organized at the airport on Thursday September 28. He explained that the new section with have a 9,000 sq metres building, two aerobridges, and three conveyor belt canopies. "At present, we have three conveyor belts out of which two are used for domestic passengers and the other one for international passengers. Once the new facility comes up, both domestic and international travellers will get three belts each," he stated. He also pointed out that the currently the airport building is spread over 18,000 sq metres.
Rao said that L&T Ltd had been entrusted with the task of conducting study about the possibility of extending the current runway here and to suggest different choices. "The company suggested three different ways like landfill of the gorges and using pillars. At any cost, we will never compromise on safety standards when extending the runway," he added.
