Bengaluru, Sep 28: There is information that Congress is preparing to coronate Rahul Gandhi as the president of All India Congress Committee. His elevation will result in creation of a vacancy of vice president, and if sources are to be believed, Mallikarjun Kharge's name is being actively considered for the post.
Congress party usually creates the post of the vice-president in special cases. Recently it was created to accommodate Rahul Gandhi. With Rahul getting the post of the president, the post of the vice-president would have been abolished for the present. Sources close to Congress high command say that there are chances of Dalit leader, Kharge, who is the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, being made vice-president of the party by retaining the post of the vice-president to stymie moves being undertaken by BJP to corner Dalit votes.
Congress badly needs to give a post of prominence to a Dalit after BJP chose a Dalit, Ram Nath Kovind, as President of India. The opinion that this step, if taken, can send a positive message to the Dalit community, is gaining ground. It is said that once Kharge is given this position, Priyanka Gandhi might be given charge of important wings of the party so that she will be ready to take a plunge into active politics by the time the next Lok Sabha election falls due.
