Karwar, Feb 14: Several students of the government first grade college at Kumta in the district registered their protest against wearing of burqas by girl students of the college, by attending the college with saffron shawls draped over their shoulders on Monday February 13.
The students pointed out that Muslim girl students happen to be the lone exception to the rule relating to wearing of uniforms. They said these girl students violate the dress code and wear burqas and accused the management and staff of the college of owning discreet silence over this issue. They wanted to know whether the college management and staff will have the same attitude if the students wear dhotis around their waists with shawl over the shoulders, which is their traditional dress. They stated that they have conformed to the dress code but have also worn saffron shawl as they like it.
The students questioned as to how the management can question them about the saffron shawls if the Muslim girls are allowed to wear burqas. "We have repeatedly drawn the attention of the college management about this violation, but no steps have been taken. So, as a measure of warning, we wore saffron shawls. If burqas are not banned in the college in the coming days, the fight against this violation will be intensified," they said.
