Mangaluru: Toll burden? Private buses in coast abruptly hike bus fares

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 7: Certain private buses moving on the highway between the city, Udupi and Kundapur have suddenly hiked bus fares since the last some days. The passengers have been caught unawares by this unexpected hike, as the bus owners had not given advance indication of their intention.

Passengers have objected to this rise in charges, as they feel that the bus owners have resorted to upward revision of fare to transfer burden of toll charges to passengers. When approached, conductors of certain buses said that the owners had decided to raise the ticket charges as the vehicles will soon be required to pay charges at tollgates. However, secretary of Canara Bus Owners Association, K Suresh Nayak, says that the fare revision that had been approved by the transport authority sometime back had been affected three to four days back, and that there was delay in implementing the hike because of problems with the ticketing machines. He said that city buses in Udupi will also revise the fares shortly.

Monthly pass rates for buses have been fixed at Rs 3,570 at Hejamady tollgate, Rs 4,335 at Gundmi, and Rs 3,620 at Talapady. So, buses moving between the city and Manipal via Udupi have to pay Rs 3,570 every month towards toll charges as they come across one tollgate on this route. The hike now affected works out to roughly ten percent, as Rs 25 has been hiked to Rs 27, and Rs 55 to Rs 60. Many passengers argue that there are no tollgates between some points of travel for eg, Padubidri to Manipal and that it would be unjust to force passengers moving between these points to bear toll charges.

Even if the average burden of toll charges have to be shifted, the transport authority has to discuss the issue and fix the hike before it can be implemented, they argue. Passengers also rue the fact that several buses have flouted the rule announced by the chairman of regional transport authority a few years back that all buses should use only ticketing machines. Some buses continue to use written tickets, they point out. In addition to this, there are complaints that buses running in certain routes collect ticket charges in excess of the ones announced by the transport authority, but both these complaints have not been seriously looked into, they add.

President of Canara Bus Owners Association, Rajavarma Ballal, said that hike in bus fares is on the cards because of the need to pay toll charges at Hajamady and Gundmi toll plazas, and that the association will shortly announce the hike being so affected.

Even before Bangalore emerging Mangalore had created own Industry in all sectors, be it is media (Udayavani, Mungaru etc), soft drinks (now attacked by Pepsi & Coke), Hotel, Transport-Pvt Bus, Hospital, Education and many more. Without Government help, the city has been developed and youth have been developed. Now due to stupid Karnataka Govt. we might loose transport sector (pvt Bus) now, where money go out of Mangalore for the development of Bangalore- Mysore.
We should not entertain Govt Buses and we loose our local entrepreneurship.
We should make our Tulunadu state separate then we can attract more projects and we retain and we control young crowd migrating out for job purpose. We can save Netravati , our culture (Kambala), and moreover now high time to save our young crowd migrating and hence our Tulunadu economy and business. Politicians focus only on Mysore- Bangalore, Then when our place will develop?

government buses will always be expensive as their union is very strong they will get good benefits + incentives + regular wage hike +paid leaves or they go on strike and govt gets help less rather than to accept all the union demands. Be careful what you wish for, private companies always offer cheap service many developed countries have privatised the entire public transport due to union head aches.

Rs 3,570 at Hejamady tollgate for one month, that means 3570/30 =Rs.119/- per day.
a bus flying from mangalore to manipal completes minimum 08 trips (round trip) per day that means 119/8 = Rs.15/- per Trip. then why need 10% hike in single ticket?

That is the karma Kanda of your UPA government.
They sold all the national highway to private operators.
They collected lacs of crores of income tax and did not maintain any national highways.
They didn't maintain shiradi ghat NH 48 nor NH 17
What do you say now? UPA was in power for 10 years and they executed only agreements?

In Dubai toll system is working and very convenient for the travelers. Dubai Government is not charging any toll charges to public buses, school children buses. Dubai charge toll charges to Taxis, and private vehicles. Taxis collect the charges from the passengers.

Why not introduce more KSRTC buses. They are more convenient for getting in and out.Older people can avail of this opportunity.KSRTC is likely to put about 100 more buses in all routes in the next 6 months.

THIS BUS FARE HIKE WHICH WAS DONE BY THE PRIVATE BUS OWNERS WITHOUT CONSULTING THE R.T.O. OR THE PUBLIC IS CLEAR BREACH OF LAW. WHERE IS THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION? WHY THEY ARE DUMB? THIS INDICATES THAT THE TOTAL FAILURE IN ADMINISTRATION OF BOTH TWIN DISTRICTS.

NOT ONLY EXPRESS BUS, ALL THE OTHER CITY,SERVICE BUSES IN MANGALORE HAVE HIKED THE PRICE IN MANGALORE. IN UDUPI ALL SERVICE BUSES HAVE HIKED THE PRICE EXCEPT CITY BUS.

I REQUEST BOTH RTO OF THE TWO DISTRICT TO GIVE A STATEMENT ON THIS. THE PEOPLE ARE IN FULL CONFUSION. IT IS THE DUTY OF THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS TO ANSWER.
TAKE STRINGENT ACTION TO THE OFFENDERS.

I was saying this from long time.
2-lane NH17 was good and it was build using tax payers hard earned money.
Why does government take tall on existing road? They can take tall on newly built 2 lanes only. Court should rule.. They cannot take tall on existing stretch of the road.
