Mangaluru, May 25: Police personnel belonging to the city crime branch here have succeeded in arresting five persons, who have been accused of peddling ganja. Reportedly, they were engaged in selling ganja in Thokkottu Volapete here. The arrests were made on Tuesday May 24. The policemen also reportedly seized five kg ganja from the possession of the arrested persons.
The identifies of the arrested persons have been given as Shariff V H (36) from Adyar Volachil, Harshith (36), residing in Kulshekar Niddel, Deekshit Poojary (37) from Kulshekar, Imran (30) from Moodushedde Shivanagara, and Prathviraj (25), who belongs to Shaktinagara here.
The city crime branch policemen were tipped off that five persons seated in a Fiat Punto car and a Bajaj Discover motor bike had arrived at Thokkottu Volapete on Tuesday for selling of ganja. The policemen, accompanied by tahsildar, Shivashankar, raided the spot and arrested the accused along with the stock of ganja found in their possession.
During their questioning, the accused told the police that they wanted to sell ganja to students and members of general public. A Fiat Punto car, a motor bike, five kg ganja, nine cellphones, and Rs 1,105 in cash were confiscated from the arrested persons. Total value of these items has been estimated at ten lac rupees.
The policemen have warned that if they find that anyone had bought or used ganja, they would be prosecuted. The raid, which was conducted under the orders of city police commissioner, M Chandra Shekhar, and guidance of deputy commissioners of police, K M Shantaraju and Dr Sanjeev Patil, was led by city crime branch inspector, Valentine D'Souza and sub-inspector, Shyam Sundar.
