RSS demands apology from Portugual PM on his visit to Goa

Panaji, Jan 19, 2016 (PTI) : The RSS today said if Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa visits Goa then he should apologise to the people of the state for 450 years long oppressive rule of Portugal.

"We are not supporting his felicitation on the soil of Goa. We don't want him to be honoured here. But BJP government wants, and if he arrives to accept the felicitation, he will have to apologise to the people of Goa for 450 years long Portuguese oppressive rule," RSS Goa unit Chief Subhash Velingkar told PTI today.

The demand from RSS comes close on the heels of statement by BJP's ally Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar who had said the Prime Minister should apologise to Goa.

The state Legislative Assembly in the session on January 15 had passed a congratulatory motion to Costa, who has roots in Margao city of South Goa district.

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had even said in the session that the government may invite Costa to the state in the near future.

Velingkar today said the kind of destruction that was unleashed by Portuguese on the soil of Goa is "unpardonable".

"Portuguese should apologise for their sins. They forced Goa into slavery for 450 years," he said.

Goa was liberated from the Portuguese rule on December 19, 1961.

Ancestors of mangaloreans who fled from Goa during the Goa Inquisition suffered greatly from the Portuguese regimes of the 16th and 17th centuries, including forcible conversions. A lot is written on the subject. Nothing will bring back what was lost and the generations who settled have accepted their plight and progressed. There is no point at all for any apology from the current political administration of Portugal or, for that matter, from the Church whose priests sent in the wake of St. Francis Xavier who spearheaded the Inquisition, even though in Canada the native Indians are demanding such apology from the church for the cultural genocide perpetrated in residential schools run by catholic priests and nuns. The Canadian government has apologized time and time again, but the native Indians (the descendants of those who suffered in residential schools by this forcible integration, are still looking for, even demanding, the current Pope to apologize. You can't look back at history. There were even more atrocious conversions during the early Mohammedan rule.

For certain percentage of the electorate of India for casting their votes as the BJP bank in Maharastra, how much misery that has created in States like Maharastra the people replied with wrath in the recent Municipal and Panchayat elections through pushing down the BJP with 39 seats at the 4th row.

The slum Dharavi is the largest slum in India with close to 1 million people. It is projected by the World Health Organization, that slum will be the largest slum in the world in 2025, and the slum population of Mumbai will be 22.5 million people.

At present 20% of the population in that slum are engaged in the leather industry, and due to the beef ban, they are caught up in serious trouble.

The BJP was elected with greater anticipation, I have written comments in the Gulf News papers my honest fear if the BJP comes into power through injecting religious fanaticism which will undermine the economy and harmony of the people of India exactly that is being fulfilled now.

Portugal is a member of European union. Forget the past. What about in present time ceremonially sending back all Indians from European union to India. (Like Idi Amin of Uganda did ) Does RSS has enough resources and ability to take care of its own people. Only reason Indian economy is not collapsed is cheep oil price in International oil market & foreign remittance.

How to define this 21st century insanity?

Mr. Sasi Tharoor through his Oxford union lectures demanded a huge colonization penalty from England and Mr. Modi highly complimented that lecture. Later on Mr. Modi went to visit England and praised both Pundit Nehru and Dr. Manmohan Sing who were British educated.

Well, the BJP-RSS union will have to get a consent in writing from the foreign leaders that they must show a broken hearted apology and yoga practice before investing billions in India.

Nobody can stop his visit to the developed countries, especially the western countries of the world. His party and himself have less regard for the minority Muslims and Christians of India, but he likes their financial investments by the trillions in India.

The Chief Secretary of Kerala, Mr. Jiji Thomson who is a member of the Orthodox Church spoke at Kottayam seminary, and he emphasized a point that the first priority of the Church is evangelization, and he may be getting involved with that. The Governor of Kerala newly appointed by Mr. Modi was present.
One BJP leader got agitated by Mr. Thomason's speech and demanded that the State of Kerala must retrench him from his post.

The Railway Minister went to Cochin and appealed to the business community to invest in the Indian Railway majority of the audience were Christians.

For the BJP playing with the religious card to come into power, they are going to sweat with the same religious card.

No need to apologize for the past. Would the RSS chief apologize to Sri Lanka for the destructive raids and looting carried out by Chola Empire ? Raja Raja and Rajendra Chola had built a formidable empire in South east Asia which could be compared to the Portuguese empire .
