Mandya, Jun 1: In an incident which occurred at Pandavapura in the district on Sunday May 31, parents of the bride, frustrated at the unreasonable dowry demand made by the groom, banished him and married the girl off to the son of her maternal uncle.
A girl from Tirumalapura in the taluk was engaged to be married to a youth from Hebbal Extension in Mysuru seven months back. The marriage was proposed to be held at the community hall by the side of Kennalu Gate near Pandavapura on Sunday. Reception had also been arranged on Saturday, which was well-attended.
Just before 10.30 am on Sunday that was fixed for tying the nuptial knot arrived, the boy demanded payment of dowry amount before he could proceed. Even though Rs 50,000 was immediately paid, he demanded for more. He behaved indecently, and said he would not marry the girl unless more money was paid. Parents of the girl then refused to give in to his demand, and asked the groom and his parents to give back ornaments and cash already collected by them. They said they are now convinced by the rude behaviour of the boy that he will not look after their daughter properly after marriage. When they refused to give back ornaments, gifts and cash, the relatives of the bride beat them up and handed them to police. In the police station, elders from both the sides entered into a compromise.
In the meanwhile, marriage of the girl was conducted with C Krishna, son of her maternal uncle. The groom not only failed to get the dowry he had demanded, but also the bride as a result.
