Mangaluru, Apr 22: The entire Dakshina Kannada district got good rain coupled with thunder and lightning on Tuesday April 21 night. A woman on a visit to relative's home in Savanur in Puttur taluk lost her life due to lightning during this period.
The deceased was Rasheeda (29), wife of Basheer from Bollayi in Sajipamooda village in Bantwal taluk. Rasheeda was on a visit to the house of her sister, who happens to be the wife of Rafique from Mantoor. Rasheeda was sitting inside her sister's home when lightning inflicted serious injuries to her. Although she was taken to hospital immediately, she lost her life before medical attention could be extended.
Rasheeda is survived by husband, two sons, and a daughter. A report about the incident was filed in Kadaba police station. Postmortem of the body was conducted on Tuesday night in the presence of taluk executive magistrate, M C Kullegowda at the government hospital, Puttur. MLA, Shakuntala Shetty, Puttur municipal president, Nellikatte Jagadish Shetty, president of Ansaruddin Jamaath Committee, Abdulla Haji, member of hospital's medical committee, Abdurrahman Azad, and others visited the family.
A cow that was inside a cattle shed at Kanchimaru in Dharmasthala village in Beltangady taluk died due to lightning on Tuesday night. As lightning also struck the adjacent house, Prabhakar (37), suffered injury to his back. He stands hospitalized. Other cattle in the shed escaped as they ran away during this period.
The house of Dayananda, living near Monkey Stand in Mangaladevi in the city, was damaged after a coconut tree got uprooted over it.
Heavy rain was reported from various places like the city, Ullal, Thokkottu, Konaje, Suratkal, etc. Because of rain and lightning, power supply and telephonic connections were disrupted.
