Sullia, Jun 14: An elderly man in a state of drunken stupor allegedly shot dead his daughter-in-law at Subramanya here on Saturday June 14.
Nagappa Gowda (70), has been arrested for shooting dead his daughter-in-law Vidya (30).
It is said that Nagappa had lost his wife several years ago and since then was living with his son Uday and daughter-in-law Vidya. However, as Nagappa used to come drunk every other night and create trouble, Uday decided to move out built his own house next to Nagappa's and lived there with his wife and son.
But the decision to live apart further worsened the situation as Nagappa used to frequently quarrel with his son for building a house in his property. Though the village panchayat tried to settle the issue several times, Nagappa and Uday failed to reach a compromise. It is said that Nagappa used to often threaten Vidya and Uday.
Matters came to a head on Friday when Nagappa reportedly came home drunk and started threatening to kill Vidya. The locals intervened and managed to calm him down. On Saturday morning, Udaya approached the Subramanya police and filed a complaint against his father for threatening his wife.
The police then came to Nagapppa's house to question him, however, before they could reach the house, Nagappa had already escaped and the police failed to find him. They then stuck a notice on the wall asking Nagappa to come to the police station.
On Saturday evening, Nagappa, reportedly inebriated and seething with anger against his son for filing the complaint, came home with an intention to confront him. However, the son was not at home, and he reportedly shot dead his daughter-in-law with a gun that was in his house. Vidya's son who had just returned from school saw his mother collapse on the floor and began screaming. Vidya died on the spot.
The neighbours who were alarmed by the incident informed the police, and soon Nagappa was arrested.
Puttur DySP H B Mendonca, circle inspector Satish B S, and Subramanya SI Ittu Naik arrived at the spot.
Subramanya police are investigating further.
