Beltangady, May 30: Taking advantage of heavy downpour, thieves broke open into a Jain Basadi at Bangady near here but failed in their attempt to steal money from the alms box on Sunday May 28 night.

This historically famous Jain basadi belongs to the Bangady royal family.  On Sunday night, the thieves entered the basadi after breaking open the huge wooden door on the Northern side.  The door was set on fire after pouring petrol on it. 

However, they failed in their attempt to open the alms box which was in the basadi.  Having failed in this, the thieves escaped by bending the iron rods of the window before breaking open the door of Jain lodge (chatra).

The theft attempt came to light on Monday May 29 morning when the basadi priest came to the basadi for worship.

Though nothing is stolen from the basadi, the front wooden door has been damaged.  The total loss has been estimated at Rs 50,000.  Only a few days that one more such attempt was made in the same basadi.

The Beltangady police have registered a case as per the complaint lodged by main priest Vishwasena Indra.
