Udupi, May 26: Vinod Oil Mill at Padubidri near here was gutted owing to short circuit on Thursday May 25 night causing a loss of Rs 4.5 lac.
Vinod Oil Mill is owned by Dayal Gadiyar. He lives in his house which is very close to the said oil mill. On Thursday night when the fire emanated in the mill, he was sleeping in his house.
However, a few passersby saw flames engulfing the mill and informed him. Immediately locals gathered and tried to extinguish fire. Some members of the Muslim community who were in the nearby mosque for Ratib celebrations too came to the help.
However, they could not extinguish fire. Hence the fire brigade personnel were summoned to the place. Two fire brigade vehicles from the city finally were able to extinguish fire after two hours. By the time most of the things in the mill, the tiled roof etc had been gutted. But the locals pulled out most of the things from the adjacent grocery shop and avoided further loss. This grocery shop too is owned by Dayal Gadiyar.
Thought the loss has been estimated at Rs 4.5 lac, the eye-witnesses are of the opinion that the loss may go much beyond the estimation.
The Padubidri police have registered a case in this regard.
