Mangalore, Dec 6: On Thursday December 5, Mangalore airport customs officials arrested a Kasargod-bound passenger for trying to smuggle in half kg gold mixed with coffee powder !

The passenger has been identified as Mohammed Ashraf, who landed at the airport from Dubai.

The estimated value of the gold is Rs 16  lac. Customs officials later produced the accused in the court.

Concealing gold in coffee packets was the latest among tactics used for smuggling gold, after several innovative attempts by air passenger in the recent months went in vain.

Speaking to daijiworld, a customs official who requested anonymity said that it is disturbing to see that despite several arrests made in the last few months, people are trying to fool the officials using different tactics. But they must be aware that Mangalore customs officials have sophisticated and advanced machines to detect and foil such attempts, he said.

    I still dont understand some People who try to smuggle Gold in different ways and either prison or giving lot of Money to customs officer or paying duty.Instead enjoying their Holidays with Family and spending Money with Family they invite Troubles ,has to bring time in prison or with the customs officer,fearing what Comes next.Gold is not unavailable in india.One who wants to make quick Money has to be Aware that loses everything at last.Our customs can even smell now ,when sSomeone Comes from UAE.and alert.you cant deceive them.so why Trouble?

    @ Pinto, If few people are bad, that doesn't mean all kasargod bound passengers are bad. 100s of kasgargod bound passenger lands in mangalore every day. Only 2 or 3 are caught n smuggling once a month. PLEASE DO NOT CARRY PERCEPTION THAT ALL KASARGOD PASSENGERS ARE SMUGGLERS.

    Gold is true wealth only because it represents wealth. Real true wealth is cows, goats, sheep, and chickens, other valuable animals which produce after their kind or fertile farmland which also produces. Time is short and only a fool would risk seizure of his/her goods and be sent to prison. So when I return to India what will I bring?... How many agree with me.

    How dare these people are in spite of nabbing so many passengers in the recent past.The Kasargod people think that all mangaloreans are fools.They are very smart,intelligent,wise enough to tackle any situations.This is not Kasargod fish market,this is Mangalore airport/customs.Beware
