Kundapur, Dec 5: In a shocking and tragic incident, a college student allegedly committed suicide after her mother told her to study instead of watching TV.
Deepa Shetty (21), daughter of hotelier Prabhakar Shetty and Hema Shetty, residents of Anegalli, is the deceased. Deepa was a second year student of BCom of Richard Almeida Memorial College, Navunda.
It is said that Deepa was short tempered and used to get annoyed at her mother whenever she advised her. She used to close the door of her room and at times refuse to eat food for two or three days out of anger, neighbours said.
On Wednesday at around 5 pm, she was watching television with her elder sister's child on her lap. Her mother reportedly shouted at her and asked her to study for her upcoming exams. Deepa got annoyed and went to her room leaving the child there. She latched her room from the inside.
The mother ignored her as she had behaved in a similar manner in the past. However, after about half-an-hour she knocked at the door and asked her to open it. When there was no response, the family got worried. They then called the locals and when they looked through the window, they found her hanging from the ceiling fan.
Deepa was the youngest among the three children of Prabhakar Shetty and Hema, who belong to a middle class family from Anegalli. Their son is said to be mentally ill and is being looked after by the family. The elder daughter is teaching at a school in Arehole, and for her sake, they had taken up a house on rent at Navunda and were staying there for the last one-and-a-half years. Prabhakar Shetty is usually away on business.
