Karkala, Dec 4: Nearly 2.91 km-long stretch from Kaduhole to Andaru here has been converted into concrete road. While it sounds like a welcome move, a glance at the road is enough to give you second thoughts.
The work includes 8 main gutters and 6 small gutters. The contractors are entrusted with five years of maintenance. The agreement stipulates that the work should be started on March 14, 2013 and completed by 2014.
An amount of Rs 1,49,58,000 had been sanctioned for the work. Udaya Shetty of Muniyalu was appointed as the first contractor.
However, the true quality of the work that was going on at break-neck speed three months ago is now exposed. The road had to be subjected to patchwork again and again even before its inauguration! The road is slated for inauguration after its completion by February 13, 2014.
The executive engineer of Udupi zilla panchayat should have ensured the quality of work. As lethargy and indifference was shown during the construction, the work that involved crores of rupees has become useless.
The central government and state government have released grants from time to time saying that the country will develop if the villages develop. People's representatives and officials have competed with each other during foundation laying and inauguration programmes. However, when it comes to ensuring quality of work, no one seems to want to take any responsibility or action.
