Kundapur, Sep 11: "Suicide attempt is caused by the mental status of an individual. The environment too is responsible for inferiority complex and mental illness. Every person is faced with tension. One should understand the situation and maintain mental strength and equilibrium," said Kundapur DySP Yashodha Sunil Ontagodi.
He was speaking after inaugurating World suicide prevention day at Shree Mata Hospital on Tuesday September 10, held under the aegis of Lioness Club, Brahmavar-Barkur.
"Foreign countries solve such problems with Yoga and meditation. There should be awareness programmes in schools and colleges regarding the dangerous trend and a struggle for the health in the society. Even if at least 10% of the people benefit from the programme, the aim of the programme will be fulfilled," he said.
"Psychiatrist Dr K S Latha was the resource person. Suicide is one of the biggest problems in India. One million people in the world commit suicide in a year as per World health organization. A person commits suicide every 40 seconds in the world. One lac people in India commit suicide in a year. A person attempts to commit suicide once in five minutes. The attempt is not to die but to put an end to the pain. It is necessary to take important precautions to avoid suicides. A responsible citizen should inspire people suffering from mental stress to get suitable medical treatment," she said.
Dr Sathish Poojary, M D at Sri Matha Hospital presided over the programme. Kundapur taluk journalists association president Shashidhar Hemmadi, Lions club Brahmavar-Barkur president Y Dayanand Shetty and Lioness president Prema D Shetty were present.
Dr Prakash Tholar welcomed and gave a key note address. Komala introduced the resource persons. Laxmi and Komala conducted the programme.
