Udupi, Apr 16: Three buses, which were moving towards Udupi, got involved with an accident near Halima Sabju marriage hall in Udyavar on national highway 66 on Monday April 15. The passengers however, had a miraculous escape, as only a few of them were left with nicks, cuts, and bruises.
One of the buses was bound for Mumbai, while the destination of two other buses was Udupi. The incident occurred, when the driver of a private bus moving from Shirva to the town suddenly applied brakes. As a result, a private express bus coming from Mangalore hit the earlier bus from behind. The Mumbai-bound bus that was next in the line, hit the express bus.
The service bus, because of the impact of the accident, got shoved to the other side of the divider. The accident would have turned into a tragedy, had there been heavy traffic on the opposite lane at that time. As no vehicles were moving at that point of time at the accident site, further loss of lives and property was averted.
Traffic on the national highway came to a standstill. Policemen led by assistant sub-inspector of police, Gourishankar, who was posted at Katapadi outpost, arrived on the spot and put in efforts to lend a semblance of orderliness to the traffic. A case was registered in Kaup police station thereafter.
