Ragupathi Bhat calls to remove Kalsanka junction barricades citing traffic congestion

Udupi, Jan 22: Former MLA Ragupathi Bhat has voiced strong concerns about the traffic congestion and lack of proper infrastructure in Udupi, citing the need for immediate action by the district administration, superintendent of police, and municipal authorities. Addressing reporters in the press conference held on January 22, he called for urgent solutions to ease the artificial traffic problems caused by unscientific planning and delays in infrastructure projects.

Bhat highlighted the severe inconvenience caused by the unscientific placement of barricades at Kalsanka Junction. He stated, "These barricades have created artificial traffic congestion. People traveling to Udupi are forced to take a longer route via Kadiyali, which is illogical and problematic, especially for large tourist buses and permit buses struggling to navigate the turns."

He emphasized that the barricades, initially thought to be a temporary measure to manage tourist traffic in December, appear to be a permanent fixture. "The barricades must be removed immediately. A better solution, such as installing traffic lights, can effectively address the problem."

Ragupathi Bhat criticized the delay in implementing smart traffic signal systems despite tenders being passed in 2020. "Poles were installed two years ago, but no lights have been set up. The tender process has been completed, and a private company has been assigned the project, he is set to start the project. The SP Dr Arun K and deputy commissioner Dr K Vidya Kumari should order the company to start the work immediately," he said.

He elaborated on the advanced system planned under the project, which includes smart traffic management and AI-based monitoring. The system, covering 13 junctions, would allow for efficient traffic control and enhanced security through automated surveillance.

Ragupathi Bhat expressed opposition to the proposed flyover construction at Kalsanka, stating it would disrupt access to Krishna Math and affect nearby commercial complexes. "The flyover will destroy the commercial sanctity of the area. Instead, the circle development should be prioritized. Public opinion must be considered before proceeding with the flyover."

Ragupathi Bhat also addressed the lack of a proper building for the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC). He recalled the 2016 proposal to acquire the old taluk panchayat office for the municipality, which could not proceed due to a lack of funds.

"The Tahsildar's office has been demolished, but the old jail remains. I propose relocating the jail and using the space for the CMC building. The municipality requires a modern facility to manage the city's needs effectively," Ragupathi Bhat said.

Ragupathi Bhat warned of a fierce protest if immediate action is not taken to remove the barricades and address the ongoing traffic and development issues. "We need practical solutions to these problems, not half-baked measures that inconvenience the public."

The memorandum will be submitted to the SP on January 22 at 12 pm, urging immediate intervention to resolve the pressing issues in Udupi.

Leader Mahesh Thakur was present during the press conference.
