Bangalore, Apr 12: Press Council of India Chairman Justice Markandey Katju has appointed the Press Council of India member Uppala Lakshman as the one-man panel on paid news for investigating complaints during the ongoing assembly polls in Karnataka on May 5.
The PCI Chairman Justice Katju, in an official order, said the one-man panel has been entrusted with the responsibility of inquiring into complaints regarding paid news and also violation of freedom of press.
The retired Supreme Court Judge said copies of the order have been sent to the chief minister and chief secretary of Karnataka, Election Commissioner of India and the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka with a request that the one-man pan el should be extended full cooperation.
Similar panels on paid news and violation of press freedom would be constituted in all other states going to elections in future, he added.
