Mangalore: Election preparations gain momentum in twin-districts

Mangalore, Apr 3: The deputy commissioners (DC) of both Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have instructed the tahsildars and block level officers to give top priority to revision of voters lists with special emphasis on border areas. The DC commissioner has asked the concerned to be very carefully in verifying the voters’ lists at border areas, as there have been complaints of fake voters.

DC, Harsh Gupta, also said that there had been complaints of hostel students coming in groups to cast votes during the recent local body elections. He said criminal cases will be filed if it is found that the voters concerned have their names in two different lists like native places and working place, etc. He also asked the police and excise departments to work in tandem to stop election-related irregularities.

On Tuesday, three contingents of Border Security Force arrived in preparation for the coming election, from Coimbatore through a train. One each of these three contingents having about 100 soldiers each, are being deployed to Chikmagalur, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts. Dakshina Kannada district will get about 10 contingents (1200 personnel) within a week, police sources said. Udupi and Chikmagalur districts are also set to get 1,000 BSF soldiers each. The contingents are meant to be deployed in sensitive areas and naxal-infested regions during election to tackle problems if any, it is learnt.
