Udupi: Thieves loot 15 sovereigns of gold, Rs 2 lac cash from shop

Udupi, Mar 31: Thieves broke into Dhanalaksmi Traders store located at Palimar under Padubidri police station limits and decamped with gold jewellery and cash worth lacs of rupees on Friday March 29 night.
The store located in Padubidri town is owned by Dinesh Prabhu.
The thieves broke open the back shutters of the store and gained entry. The miscreants then broke open the cupboard and decamped with about 15 sovereigns of gold and Rs 1.95 lac cash.
It is said that on Friday, Dinesh and his family had to visit a relative's house for some function. As it was a holiday for banks on account of Good Friday, Dinesh transferred all the gold and cash from his house to his shop for safe-keeping.
However, the gold and cash were found to be missing when he opened the shop on Saturday March 30 morning.
Police suspect that it might be the handiwork of someone known to Dinesh and who knew about the transfer of gold from the house to the shop.
Karkal DySP Jayanth Shetty, Kaup circle inspector Shivanand Walekar, Padubidri inspector Mahadev Setty visited the spot and took up investigation. Canine squad and fingerprint experts from Udupi were also pressed into service.
A case has been registered in Padubidri police station. Investigation is on.
