Mangalore: Bus overturns at Kulshekar - Driver dies, passengers injured

Mangalore, Mar 31: The driver of the bus that overturned at Kalpane in Kulshekar on Saturday March 30 evening passed away later in the night.

The deceased has been identified as Nandish (40), a resident of Saripalla.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Sources said that more than ten passengers, including four women, were injured in the accident.

Mangalore, Mar 30: Passengers of a private bus sustained minor injuries after it overturned at Kalpane, Kulshekar here on Saturday March 30.

The bus belonging Ambika travels was moving towards Shaktinagar when the accident took place.

Eyewitnesses said that the bus was moving at a high speed. When it reached Kalpane, the driver veered to the left where there was a ditch, the bus went out of control and fell over to the right.

Luckily, no major harm was done as the passengers escaped with minor injuries. The bus was full, but the total number of injured persons was not immediately available.

The injured were shifted to various hospitals in the city.

Mangalore rural and Kadri police arrived at the spot.

A large crowd gathered and helped in shifting the injured to the hospitals.

    Agree that a few drivers are rash but pls understand from their point of view also. I dont think any driver will do the accident intentionally.. many here are writing about our Udupi -Mangalore bus drivers.. well, our RTO has given permit for every 1 or 2 minutes and the condition of the road is so bad that they are not able to reach on time and even if a minute gets late 2 buses will over take him and they will loose the collection. They too are working for their daily bread, they too have family like us and they too are human beings like us. We blame for everything.if a bus gets late by 2 min we start blaming the driver that he is slow and if something happens then we blame the driver again.I travel from udupi to mangalore daily and the above mentioned points are my observations from past 2 years. Lets first fight for better roads and infra....

    As citizens of India, we can put so many suggestions going forward. But who is going to listen. The officers who are supposed to protect the interests of a citizen, are turning a blind eye on such incidents. Does that mean that ordinary citizens should take up the law into their own hands. We have so many political parties vying for power from time to time Will these political parties bring some changes to the public transport system in D.K. Without exception, every public buses plying in and around Mangalore city is a nuisance rather than a cofort to the people of in and around Mangalore. I strongly believe if RTO and Police department interfere and gazzette the law of harsh punishmnet to the rude and reckless public bus drivers. Even the permits of such operators should be removed without appeal. Imposing fine of Rs500/- is not the solution to Mangalore city bus operations disasters.

    I feel no symapthy or pity towards the bus drivers demise, they deserve it..driving from mangalore to kundapura is never less than a nightmare because of those****, they keep honking horrible horns untill u give them a way out,regardless of any traffic condition they keep blowing horns. they dont care overtaking at any circumstances. they dont value human lives...every rash bus driver must learn a good lesson from this incident.

    It is indeed tragic that this accident took place mainly due to overspeeding and negligence of the bus driver who unfortunately died.
    Another reason for the accident is insufficient roadspace and ditches by the roadside which need to be filled up to avoid the bus or auto losing balance and falling by the side. I remember some years back, one Lady from Kalpane who was returning after attending Infant Jesus Novena died as the autorickshaw in which she was travelling fell on the side after it lost balance due to the roadside ditch. So, the Municipality should wake up and start filling up all roadside ditches immediately and start widening the roads to increase the roadspace for vehicles to move freely thereafter, so that these kind of accidents are avoided in future. Also, the traffic department should install neon traffic signs particularly at road junctions and indicate the speedlimit to 40 Km p.h. in urban areas and impose fines for exceeding the speed limits.

    May all Injured get well soon.. No sympathy for the Driver. All Driver who is Driving Harsh and Screw up Traffic Rules Should Result in the Same. They Drive like inhuman or Killer, so a Day Murder should end up life same like this so at-least other driver (Killers) get a Good Lesson....

    I just reached office and evidenced another challenging day driving on our roads. It was from Pumpwell to thokkottu, driving is like real hell. The private bus drivers look at you as of he has come to end your life. Express busses to karasargod, city busses with number 44, 42, 51... oops... Really feel like get in to to bus and slap them for the way they drive. Over taking, rash driving, no driving nor over taking descipline... Pity on two wheelers and also ladies driviers whom these deadly drivers chase out of road. I wonder why our RTO , Commissioners, Police and other officials are silent seeing these happening ? DO they expect us to take care of ourselves from these devils ? Really no clue ...

    Let his soul rest in peace. It's not only this bus, but every other private bus plying in the city and intercity buses are death carriers. It's unfortunate that our RTO, DC and Police commissioners are not doing anything to stop this kind of rash driving. If they would have taken some action, the private buses which are tagged all over India as Death Carriers could have completely eliminated and so many innocent lives could have saved. As these so called public servants have the department vehicle to move around for them and their families, they won't even know the hardship a normal citizen goes through everyday because of the bad roads and reckless drivers. RTO, DC and Police Commissioner please wake up and do something about this situation.

    All the comments are possibilities of leading to such an accident but we should not be blaming the driver directly unless we know the case. In this case the driver got a severe heart attack, from a distance he was complaining of chest pain and with the actual attack he banged into the pole and the bus stopped. May his soul rest in peace

    for safety required:
    (a) atleast all the road in the
    city four (4) lanes.
    (b) required lines
    (c) required proper U-turn, and
    signals.
    (d) Required more cctv.

    unless and until u don't take above step, people will die everyday.

    all these responsible is our 3rd class govt.

    Govt. have give road tender for foreign company to bring international standard.

    All road project must provide 10-15 years warranty certificate.

    This drivers speeding show did not last very long. He is gone forever. In earlier trip this driver made a right turn on my left side thus almost collided with my car near Shakthi nagar - Kulshekar junction. He made right turn in such a high speed,He almost collided with my car. I had to curse Him. Instead of me He lost his.... I had stopped him near Nanthoor by Kadri East Police. If the Police should have punished him then,this would not have happened. On Shakthi Nagar Road Nandish was terrorizing another Car ahead of him in such a way that car driver pulled his vehicle to a side to let the bus go. Many buses pass on the left side with high speed.

    Mangalore bus Drivers use mobiles when driving and attention is not on the road but on mobile

    Mangalore bus Drivers are in a hurry to leave bus stop not seeing whether passenger has got in or not

    Mangalore bus Drivers blow sharp shrilled horn at highest decible level which is not allowed

    Mangalore bus Drivers love to frighten other vehicles on road

    Mangalore bus Drivers are over worked or they ask for extra hours - depends


    all this can be avoided totally only if they remember that they too have a family to go back to.

    Mangalore roads are in bad condition

    Between main road and ditch, there is no hard shoulder or barrier or indication. Whose job is this ?
    and speeding drivers have to fall into this ditch no other option

    so please train the bus drivers to take utmost care.

    For your information, there are no pathholes on this road. It is a highway & smooth road. The accident is due to high speed, reckless driving and no feeling that the life of so many passengers are in his hands.

    In Mangalore, traffic rules are only for light vehicles. There is absolutely no rules applicable for buses, esp. city buses as they are hand in gloves with RTO officials and Traffic Police. These officials are responsible for such accidents in Mangalore. There are so many accidents taking place in this area & none are concerned about this. Thank God, the bus overturned to the right side, if it was on the left side, there would have been more casualties as there were many people travelling on the foot board.

    Wake up RTO!.. there r lot of accidents happening in & around the city..I would say the RTO shld b held responsible for all tht is happening coz they r d ones issuing license to pple without proper training..there is a process the drivers need to follow in order to take a license..the RTO need to educate them,basic traffic manners have to be followed,go through a test(theory & practical)..this is hw we attain license in middle east countries..the RTO shld implement the same in India as well..
    On a serious note: the AUTO DRIVERS need to be educated first coz they r the ones creating a mess and have become a nuisance in the city..i dont knw wht is in their head..no hand signals, no indicaters, they themselves dont knw where they r heading..the person driving behind an auto has to be extra cautious coz u never knw when they would take a left or right turn..and YES they have a license to drive.. all thanks to our dear RTO for being so generous & kind to these drivers..its all abt filling their pockets.. rite RTO?

    Dont blame anyone but the owners as they give the drivers the time frame. I travelled once to Udipi and I know how it was then but now it must be worse. No feelings for people but only for money. If the Government is strict, nothing happens.

    God save us!! Even he cannot..The Devils on the roads in n around Mlr need to be tamed.The blaring horns need to be disconnected.Random checks for drunken driving should be carried out.Speed limits enforced(if need be speed speed governors installed).Strict punitive measures should be enforesed to prevent any further loss of life n property.Police should move around in unmarked cars to nab the offenders.These are just some measures to make driving a pleasure n less stressful.

    Will some one advise on how to escalate this issue to the new DC, something like an email address should be fine.Bus drivers in Mangalore & Udupi, have taken dangers to new heights, everyday an innocent pedestrians is dying becaus e of negligence by these bus driver s or i should say school kids competing with each other for a 100 Meter race. The fine is a mere Rs 500 for negligent driving & because there is no fear, the driver is let scot free after paying a pittance, i have been through a casualty where the family is still suffering & as our courts run at a snail pace, i wonder when justice will be given to the families of those affected. Knowing that we have a very new DC who is a stickler to the rules, its time that decisions should be taken weather to permit government buses to ply within the city than having these private death carriers.
