Udupi: Murder at Manipal End Point - arrested persons known to victim

Udupi, Mar 19: The Manipal police have claimed success in cracking down the mysterious murder of a resident from Dendabettu in Kuntalpady, Sanoor, near Karkala in front of Green Park hotel, Manipal at MIT Junction, on March 10. The body of Naveen was found lying in a pool of blood, with his head having been smashed with a boulder.
The arrested persons are Basavaraj Mariyannanavar (21) from Madoor in Hanagal taluk, Haveri district, and Yashwant Puttappa (38), from Bidri village in Sorab taluk, Shimoga district. Both of them stay in huts located near Manipal End Point, and were well known to the murdered person.
The police, during their investigation, learnt that Naveen was fighting with a couple of persons the day he was murdered. On suspicion, they summoned a few persons known to Naveen to the police station. During interrogation, the above accused admitted to their crime, the police said.
Yashwant, one of the accused, had a score to settle with the deceased, as Naveen, in a drunken state, had eve teased one of his relatives during her visit to Manipal to take part in the annual festival of a Daivasthana in there sometime back.
Yashwant, along with Basavaraj, strangulated Naveen at around 7 pm on March 10, and then smashed his head with a boulder, initial investigations reveal. The accused were produced in a court, whereupon they were remanded in judicial custody till March 30.
