Mangalore: Congress launches publicity campaign for Assembly elections

Mangalore, Mar 18: The Congress party on Monday March 18 launched its publicity campaign for the upcoming state Assembly elections with convention of its party leaders and workers at Nehru Maidan. It was also a thanksgiving programme to express gratitude to the voters who brought victory to the party in the recent urban local body elections.
Congress leaders Veerappa Moily, Oscar Fernandes and his wife Blossom, Janardhan Poojary, Ramanath Rai, Jayaparakash Hedge, Abhayachandra Jain, Vinay Kumar Sorake, K S Mohammed Masood, U T Khader, Mithun Rai, Moideen Bawa, Vasath V Salian, Shakunthala Shetty, Mamatha Gatty, Vijay Kumar Shetty, J R Lobo, Ashith Pereira, Arun Coelho, G A Bawa, Gafoor, Padmanabh Naringana, Ibrahim Kodijal, B H Khader, Sadashiva Ullal, Sriram Patje, Ashraf, Ivan D’Souza, Nagendra and others were present on the dais.
The programme was inaugurated by lighting the auspicious lamp by the dignitaries. The oath taking ceremony by all the elected membersof the urban local body and the candidates who have submitted their nominations for the legislative assembly election was carried out by veteran Congress leader, Janardhan Poojary.
Speaking after the inauguration, Veerappa Moily thanked everyone for bringing victory to Congress in the ULB elections. He urged the elected members to take the oath earnestly and not just utter it. He also asked them to be responsible every minute and most importantly, to be non-corrupt.
"If all these points are adhered to, then the public will surely accept, respect and choose Congress in the upcoming elections as well. No Congress leader should fall prey to operation Kamala of BJP that is in force, instead we should join hands to demolish that operation from the root," he said.
"Public need freedom from caste discrimination,corruption and other evils deeply rooted in the society. Congress has full power to uproot all these evils. Sonia Gandhi was the first to initiate the anti-corruption drive by means of Lokpal Bill. She is the one who has always been against gender discrimination, crime against women and has taken serious steps to prevent the same," he said.
Oscar Fernandes said, "Congress manifesto shouldn’t remain as just a manifesto, appropriate steps have to be taken to fulfil the promises. All the newly-elected city corporators have enhanced the image of Congress. The ULB results are a clarion call to prepare for the upcoming legislative assembly elections," he said.
The programme was presided over by B Ramanath Rai, who welcomed the huge gathering. Ibrahim Kodijal proposed the vote of thanks.
