Mangalore, Mar 9: "Every day women have to face and suffer harassment; violence on women is increasing day by day. Intellectuality and morality are the jewels of women and not obscenity or nudity. All the evils and harassment on women happens because of free sex and exposing nudity in her attire," said Shahida Tasnim, president, National Women’s Front of India, addressing a symposium, felicitation, and prize distribution programme organized on the occasion of ‘International Women’s Day’ at Jamiyyatul Falah Hall here on Friday March 8.
"The present society has treated women as a commodity and misused her in TV shows, advertisements, and internet pornography. Depicting women obscenely is not liberty but involves misusing the innocence of a girl. Women’s issues like harassment, violence, and assault are easily politicalized. Though there are reservations for woman, all her power is exercised by her husband or father. But she is not given any liberty. Even in issues like home stay incident, pub attack, and church attack in the coastal area, women have been victimized," she added.
Tassnim quoted the example of Manipur’s Irom Chanu Sharmila and said that she is an innocent woman who is fighting for justice and she should be a role model to society. She added that the government should stop all narcotic drugs, dirty images, and films on the internet which spoil the psyche of children.
Lydia D’Cunha, president, Catholic Women’s Council, said, "We should retrospect about the condition of women in this society. Even the pain and grievance of women is easily politicalized instead of providing her justice. Even in coastal areas, we can witness the gruesome killing of Soujanya and Sowmya. Doesn’t a woman have any right to live? Even we have the right to live. There is no emergency cell for women in the district to lodge their grievances."
Mumthaz Pakkaladka, resource person of Talent Research Foundation, said, "Chastity is wealth to women. In the name of freedom, women should not lose their moral values. Present society though it is well-educated, women should be more careful and responsible. Even we need to educate women on the importance of this day. So, don’t be silent, protest against violence on women; if you are silent you are promoting the culprits."
On this occasion, Suraiyya and Rubaiana for achievements in the field of Karate, Nishan Anjum who scored high in MSW, and Tabbussum for service to HIV-infected children, were felicitated.
Zohara Abbas, Jyothi Guruprasad, and Shahida A state president, NWF of Karnataka, were present on the occasion.
