Udupi: Water Woes Worsen Due As Levels Decrease in Swarna River

Udupi, May 18: “The city is facing a scarcity of water since the storage in Swarna River has depleted due to the lack of rains,” said MLA Raghupati Bhat.

Addressing media persons on Thursday May 17, Bhat said the water levels in Baje vented dam had depleted and the council had supplied 24-hours water till Sunday May 13 and resumed water supply on every alternative day effective from Thursday May 17 in various parts of the city.

“Tanker water will be supplied to hilly areas where normal pressure will not fill overhead tanks.  A helpline has been set up to address water woes,” he added.

    This situation was to be expected.Unbridled construction activities is ruining this once beautiful Udupi- Manipal twin towns. Very little has been done to create new catchment areas for water.Authorities concerned must put an immediate halt to construction of high rises.
